Impression of Dawn
Medium
Paint, Linen
Date
December, 2022
This gown design was inspired by Claude Monet’s Impression, Sunrise, which I first discovered while volunteering as a selected docent at the Impression, Sunrise exhibition in Shanghai. The silhouette follows a classic floor-length evening dress, accentuated by a blue satin ribbon at the waist that echoes the dominant tones of the piece.
The main palette draws directly from Monet’s painting—sunset reds, oranges, and yellows blending into soft pinks, purples, and blues reminiscent of the morning sky. On the left shoulder, a flowing cape reproduces brushstrokes from Impression, Sunrise, capturing its atmospheric light and motion. The right arm features a pleated sleeve inspired by vintage French court fashion, its color harmonizing with the hues of the gown. Together, these elements merge Impressionist aesthetics with contemporary couture, translating Monet’s poetic vision into wearable art.
